The 17th biennial conference will be held in Bemidji, MN known as the first city on the Mississippi and home to lumberjack legend Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox. The Hampton Inn and the DoubleTree Hotel (adjacent to one another) are located on the shores of Lake Bemidji. Paved hiking trails right outside the hotel doors lead hikers around the lake and into Bemidji State Park. September in northern Minnesota is a perfect time to experience the fall colors. Visitors may enjoy the changing leaves on the 30-minute drive to the Headwaters of the Mississippi in Itasca State Park.

Hotel room have been reserved at both the Hampton Inn (218-751-3600), and the DoubleTree Hotel (218-441-4400), for September 18-22nd. The rooms are reserved under SAMRM. The Hampton Inn rate is $129/night (plus taxes and fees) and the DoubleTree rate is $139/night (plus taxes and fees). The blocked rooms will be released by the hotels 30 days prior to the conference.

Conference Theme:

This engaging two-day international conference provides a forum to discuss strategies for providing nursing care based on understanding the client’s worldview within a cultural perspective. Through this lens the foundation essential to facilitating the client’s healing, health, and wellbeing will be shared. Invited speakers will address issues relevant to understanding the client’s worldview and cultural perspective to enhance health, wellness, and wellbeing. Conference participants will be engaged through dialogue and experiential opportunities.

A Wednesday afternoon, September 19th preconference will be offered to introduce basic concepts and application of Modeling and Role-Modeling nursing theory to practice. There will be a SAMRM membership meeting on Saturday morning, September 22nd. We invite abstract submissions for a Thursday afternoon poster session.

Poster Abstract Submission Information Submit abstracts to Dr. Eileen Curl at by May 31, 2018. Poster abstract must support the conference goals listed below:

  • Encourage intercultural dialogue to facilitate healing, health and well-being through understanding the client’s worldview and cultural perspective.
  • Disseminate knowledge and application of Modeling and Role-Modeling holistic nursing theory acquired through research, practice, and teaching.
  • Provide a forum for intercultural dialogue on holistic nursing concepts in relation to Modeling and Role-Modeling theory.
  • Inspire best practices, education and research grounded in holistic relationship-centered nursing across populations and cultures.

There is an airport located in Bemidji, approximately 5 miles from the hotels. There are complementary hotel shuttles (directly to and from the airport) that can be arranged for transportation needs. Other airports that can be considered are Fargo (2.5-hour drive), Duluth (3-hour drive), and Minneapolis/St. Paul (4-hour drive).
